Bleeding and Hair Transplant Surgery

May 06, 2017 @ 04:00 PM — by Ryan Welter

A man examining his receding hairline in the mirrorAt New England Center for Hair Restoration, our team of hair restoration specialists provides customized hair loss treatment plans utilizing the safest, most advanced techniques and technologies currently available. Patients emerge from treatment, after an appropriate recovery period, with fuller, thicker heads of their own naturally growing hair. Truly, hair transplant surgery has the power to transform our patients’ quality of life and self-esteem profoundly and permanently - and it often does precisely that.

As safe and effective as hair transplant surgery generally is, it remains a major surgical procedure. Therefore, as with any form of surgery, it does involve possible side effects, some more likely than others. One of the more common side effects associated with hair transplant surgery is bleeding. When discussing bleeding and hair transplant surgery at our Boston, MA hair loss clinic, our hair restoration specialists assure patients that bleeding is a perfectly normal side effect and usually nothing to worry about. They also discuss ways to minimize bleeding and the recovery timeline in general.

Are you looking for a safe, permanent solution to hair loss? If so, please schedule your initial consultation at New England Center for Hair Restoration today.

Where Does Bleeding Occur after Hair Transplant Surgery?

In most cases, our surgeons use the follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique to perform hair transplant surgery, in which individual follicular unit grafts are harvested from a donor area and transplanted into the recipient area. In rare cases, however, we also perform hair transplant surgery using the follicular unit transplant (FUT) technique, in which a small strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head. The follicular units are then harvested from this strip prior to transplantation.

Using either technique, patients often experience some bleeding in both the donor area and the recipient area. This bleeding is a natural part of the healing process and will subside over the course of the patient’s recovery.

How Long Does the Bleeding Typically Last?

In most cases, bleeding subsides within two weeks whether the patient undergoes hair transplant surgery using the FUE technique or the FUT technique. During this time, the wounds in the donor and recipient areas will scab over. It is very important that patients avoid picking at or peeling these scabs as they can interfere with proper healing and even harm the transplanted hair follicles by doing so.

Patients can promote timely healing by following all post-surgical instructions provided to them by our surgeons to the absolute letter. These instructions will include details on how and when to clean the surgical graft sites, how to reduce swelling, and what types of medication can and cannot be taken during the recovery stage. Patients will also be advised not to participate in any activities that could result in sweating while recovering from surgery as this could interfere with healing and worsen bleeding.
